Supermarkets withdraw Nutella

Supermarkets withdraw Nutella cocoa cream due to possible cancer risk

The popular Nutella cocoa cream is in the spotlight. Many supermarkets have removed it from their shelves because one of its ingredients, specifically palm oil, can cause cancer due to its manufacturing process, reports 'The Daily Mail'.

A report prepared by the European Food Standards Agency (EFSA) warned in May 2016 that palm oil is more carcinogenic than any other oil when refined at temperatures above 200 degrees Celsius.

Renewed or die?
In response, the Italian company Ferrero, manufacturer of this chocolate cream, has launched a televised campaign insisting that the system they use to make their palm oil is at a lower temperature, thus minimizing the formation of dangerous pollutants called esters glycidyl or GE, as reported by the Telegraph.co.uk portal

This controversial ingredient gives Nutella its smooth texture and prolongs its shelf life. "Making Nutella without palm oil would produce a substitute of inferior quality, it would be a setback," says the company's purchasing manager, Vincenzo Tapella.

Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world; One of the reasons is because it is cheaper. A change of this ingredient would mean Ferrero an extra cost of between 8 and 22 million dollars a year.
